Scholarship Cover Letter Guide: Stand Out From Competition
Scholarship Cover Letter Guide: Stand Out From Competition
A scholarship cover letter is your introduction to the scholarship committee.
It's the first thing they read (after your name). It sets the tone. It either makes them want to read more or put your application aside.
In this guide, I'll teach you how to write cover letters that get noticed.
What is a Scholarship Cover Letter?
A cover letter is:
- 250-400 words
- A professional greeting to the committee
- An introduction to your application
- A hook that makes them interested
Not all scholarships ask for cover letters. But when they do, it matters.
The Winning Cover Letter Structure
The Header
Your Name
Your Email
Your Phone
Date
[Committee Name/Scholarship Name]
[Organization]
[Address]
The Greeting
"Dear [Name/Committee],"
If you don't know the name, research it. A generic "To Whom It May Concern" signals laziness.
The Opening (Hook)
Goal: Make them want to keep reading
❌ Weak: "I am writing to apply for the [Scholarship] because I believe I am a strong candidate."
✅ Strong: "When the power went out during my final exam, I finished using my phone as a flashlight—and still scored 98%. That's the kind of determination I bring to everything. I'm applying for the [Scholarship] because I'm ready to channel that persistence into research that saves lives."
The Middle (Your Case)
Goal: Show why YOU specifically deserve this
Include:
- Your strongest qualification
- Evidence of your potential
- How this scholarship helps
- What makes you unique
The Closing
Goal: Express genuine enthusiasm
"I'm excited about the possibility of joining [Organization]. Thank you for considering my application. I'm available to discuss my qualifications at your convenience."
Proof it one more time. Then submit with confidence. 💪
