Institute of International Education (IIE)Southeast AsiaScholarshipsDeadline: Posted

The Freeman-ASIA scholarship provides financial support to U.S. undergraduates for study abroad programs in East and Southeast Asia. This initiative aims to increase the number of American students who understand Asian cultures by offering funding to cover essential study abroad costs such as airfare, tuition, and living expenses.

This scholarship is particularly focused on students with demonstrated financial need who plan to study in approved locations like Japan, Vietnam, and Thailand. Recipients are required to complete a service project upon returning to their home campus to promote study abroad opportunities.

Eligibility

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents, currently receiving need-based financial aid, and maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 on a 4.0 scale. They must also have at least one term of enrollment remaining after returning from Asia and apply for a program in one of the approved locations, such as Cambodia, South Korea, or Indonesia.

Benefits

Funding levels depend on the duration of the program: up to $3,000 for summer programs, up to $5,000 for semester or quarter programs, and up to $7,000 for academic year programs. This funding covers costs such as round-trip airfare, local transportation, and housing.
