The Mastercard Foundation Scholars Program at Makerere University aims to deepen inclusive university education and support 1,000 young people from Africa to access quality education and transition into dignified and fulfilling work. This program provides scholarships to academically talented young men and women from Sub-Saharan Africa whose access to higher education is constrained by social and economic barriers.

This initiative is part of a renewed partnership between Makerere University and the Mastercard Foundation, which will provide scholarships for 10 years at the main campus for both Undergraduate and Graduate levels. The program is designed to empower talented young individuals facing economic barriers in pursuing their university education.

Eligibility

To be eligible to apply, applicants must be:

  • Ugandan nationals, refugees, students with disabilities, internally displaced young people, or international students.
  • Applicants must have applied for admission to Makerere University’s main campus under the private sponsorship scheme for the academic year 2026/2027.
  • They should have completed their advanced secondary level education in an African country, hold a second class/credit diploma, or passed the mature age entry of Makerere University.
  • Applicants must be experiencing financial hardships and should not hold any other scholarship.
  • They should be 28 years old or younger at the time of application, or 32 years old or younger if in the Refugee or Persons with Disabilities categories.

Benefits

The scholarship covers tuition fees, accommodation, and other related expenses for the duration of the program.
