The Transformative Research Challenge (TRC) 2026 invites young researchers with innovative ideas to transform global agrifood systems. Participants have the chance to pitch their research solutions at the FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy, and compete for up to $20,000 in funding. This prestigious global competition empowers youth-led projects that have established an initial proof of concept through lab tests or controlled experiments.

Finalists will receive substantial support, including fully funded travel to Italy, scientific mentorship, and opportunities for global visibility. This is a remarkable chance to accelerate impactful research on a global stage.

Eligibility

Applicants must be aged 18-35 and possess relevant technical or research expertise. Projects must be applied and research-led, with a tested proof of concept. Innovations should be lab-tested or validated in controlled conditions (Technology Readiness Levels: 3-5). The proposal must be evidence-based and feature a clear methodology with measurable objectives.

Benefits

Winning teams can receive up to $20,000 in funding, including $10,000 for specific prize categories and an additional $10,000 for the grand prize. Finalists receive fully funded travel to Rome and access to expert-led masterclasses.
