The African STARS Fellowship Programme 2026 is designed for ambitious African scientists, researchers, and young professionals eager to transform the continent’s health landscape. This fully funded fellowship offers world-class training and international collaboration in epidemic preparedness and biomedical innovation, with two distinct tracks: Advanced Translational Training (ATT) and Young Professional Program (YPP). Participants will gain hands-on experience in leading research environments in South Africa and Senegal.

This programme aims to strengthen Africa’s scientific workforce, ensuring the continent can lead its own response to epidemic threats. With comprehensive support from the Mastercard Foundation, selected fellows will have access to travel, accommodation, mentorship, and professional development opportunities.

Eligibility

  • Nationality/Residency: Must be African citizens or residents in Africa. Diaspora applicants are eligible for the YPP track.
  • Age Limit: 35 years old or younger at the start of the fellowship.
  • Educational Background: Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree; MSc or PhD preferred.
  • Fields of Study: Genomics, diagnostics, vaccine design, biotechnology, bioinformatics, research management, and entrepreneurship.
  • Commitment: Must be available for the full duration of the chosen track (4-6 months for ATT or 12 months for YPP).
  • Language: Proficiency in English is essential; French may be advantageous for placements in Senegal.
