AREF Research Development Fellowship 2026
The AREF Research Development Fellowship 2026 offers up to £47,000 to young African researchers in health for research placements in Africa or Europe. This program aims to develop the skills of emerging researchers, strengthen research on significant or neglected diseases, and promote scientific leadership among young researchers.
The fellowship lasts up to 15 months and includes preparatory phases, research placements, and follow-up activities. It is designed to enhance local research capacity in Africa and provide structured mentorship and an international network for researchers.
Eligibility
Applicants must be early-career health researchers based in Africa, holding a PhD or equivalent qualifications. They should be employed in a research position for at least 30% of their time. Candidates based outside Africa can apply if they have an honorary contract with an African institution and spend at least 70% of their time in Africa.
Benefits
Funding varies based on the duration of the fellowship: up to £25,000 for 3 months, £37,000 for 6 months, and £47,000 for 9 months. Additionally, a seed fund of up to £50,000 is available for generating pilot data.
