
PhD Studentship in Language Evolution 2026 for International Applicants (Fully Funded)
The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics offers a fully funded 4-year PhD opportunity focused on experimental language evolution research. This doctoral position is part of the research group Language Evolution and Adaptation in Diverse Situations (LEADS) and is designed for candidates interested in how human languages emerge, evolve, and diversify. The program begins on 1 September 2026 and is open to international applicants.
The PhD project will explore the social and cognitive forces that shape language evolution through experimental communication games and artificial language learning studies. Candidates will engage in research that simulates real-world language evolution processes, contributing to a deeper understanding of linguistic diversity and communication systems.
Eligibility
Applicants must have a Master’s degree (or be near completion by August 2026) in Linguistics, Psychology, Cognitive Science, or Neuroscience. A strong interest in language evolution and experience in empirical research are essential. Familiarity with experimental tools, programming in R and/or Python, and knowledge of statistical modelling are required. Excellent written and spoken English is necessary.
