The Pivot Fellowship 2026 by the Simons Foundation is designed to support established researchers transitioning into new scientific disciplines. This prestigious program promotes cross-disciplinary innovation by enabling leading academics to apply their expertise in unfamiliar fields, fostering breakthroughs at the intersection of knowledge areas.
Selected fellows will undergo a dedicated training year embedded within a host laboratory, gaining new technical skills and integrating into a new academic culture under the mentorship of an experienced researcher. This immersive experience is crucial for advancing interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation.
Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Hold a Ph.D., M.D., or equivalent degree.
- Be faculty members at an academic institution or hold an equivalent research position.
- Demonstrate a strong track record of achievement in their current field.
- Propose a transition into a clearly distinct discipline within the natural sciences, mathematics, or related fields.
- Secure institutional approval for a full year of leave.
- Not hold any concurrent fellowship providing salary support during the training year.
Benefits
The fellowship includes full salary support for one academic year and a $10,000 allowance for research, travel, and professional development. Mentors receive a $50,000 research fund to support lab activities.
