Sawaba Fellowship 2026 for African Researchers and Artists (Fully Funded)

Liberation Alliance AfricaAfricaFellowshipsPosted

The Sawaba Fellowship provides a structured intellectual and creative space for researchers, artists, activists, and community organizers to engage in critical discourse and knowledge production. Grounded in decolonial feminist futures, the fellowship invites participants to interrogate colonial myths and generate alternative epistemologies rooted in lived experience and community practice.

The 2026 theme, 'Not Pioneers of an Empty Land,' challenges narratives that depict colonized territories as unoccupied and encourages fellows to foreground indigenous knowledge systems and social governance structures. This three-month intensive program includes a fully funded in-person gathering and aims to produce work that advances critical consciousness and challenges dominant narratives.

Eligibility

The fellowship invites applications from individuals engaged in decolonial, feminist, and anti-imperialist thought. Ideal candidates include artists, academics, journalists, writers, architects, community organizers, and interdisciplinary practitioners. Applicants should demonstrate strong analytical engagement with global and regional issues and a commitment to epistemic liberation.

Deadline: Ongoing

Benefits

Fellows receive full support for a three-day residential retreat and other program-related expenses.
