The 2026–2027 Scholars at Risk (SAR) Academic Freedom Fellowship, supported by the Mellon Foundation, is a prestigious opportunity for early-career researchers dedicated to defending intellectual independence and academic freedom. This fellowship offers a comprehensive academic development experience, including financial support, remote participation, and global networking opportunities.

Fellows will engage in monthly workshops, receive research development support, and contribute to significant academic outputs, all while being part of a global community focused on advancing academic freedom.

Eligibility

This fellowship is open to early-career researchers worldwide who hold a PhD obtained within the last 8 years or are doctoral candidates in the final stages of completion. Applicants must have an active affiliation with a university or research institution and demonstrate a strong interest in academic freedom or related fields. Applications from researchers from the Global South and underrepresented communities are strongly encouraged.

Benefits

Approximately $8,000 stipend for research and academic outputs, fully online participation.
