
Scholars at Risk Academic Freedom Fellowships 2026/2027 for Early-Career Researchers (Remote, Stipend Provided)
The Scholars at Risk Academic Freedom Fellowships for 2026/2027 offer early-career researchers a unique opportunity to explore and strengthen academic freedom through structured remote research. Supported by the Mellon Foundation, this fellowship not only facilitates high-quality academic outputs but also fosters professional development and collaboration within a global community of scholars.
Fellows will engage in monthly workshops, peer learning sessions, and networking opportunities, culminating in significant research outputs such as academic publications or policy papers. Each fellow receives a stipend of approximately USD 8,000 to support their research-related expenses.
Eligibility
Applicants must hold a PhD awarded within the last 8 years or be doctoral candidates in the final stages of completion. They should have an active affiliation with a university or research institution and demonstrate a strong interest in academic freedom or higher education policy. Preference is given to researchers from the Global South and those currently or formerly at risk.
Benefits
Each fellow receives a stipend of approximately USD 8,000 for research-related costs and publication activities.
